Siemens today announced a brand new name for its landmark centre for urban sustainability at a high level ‘topping out’ ceremony in East London.
The £30 million visitor attraction and global knowledge hub – the Crystal – will open to the public next summer and show how the latest infrastructure technology can make the world’s cities better places to live and work.
Designed and under construction in two dramatic, crystal-shaped sections, the Crystal will be an eye-catching new landmark for London’s Royal Victoria Docks, at the epicentre of the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson's regeneration plans for the east of the capital. Iconic Building Infographic
The Crystal has been designed to be one of the most sustainable buildings in the world. It is aiming for top scores of the most stringent environmental international standards for sustainable design and construction LEED and BREEAM.
Designed as an ‘all electric’ building, it demonstrates innovative technologies using solar power and ground source heat pumps to generate its own energy – which means that no fossil fuels are burnt in the building. It also stores electrical energy in a battery. The Crystal showcases existing technologies that support sustainable urban living and profiles Siemens’ Environmental Portfolio – the largest and most comprehensive in the world.
