    About the Crystal

    The Crystal – a landmark global urban sustainability centre – will open to the public in London in the summer of 2012. The iconic new centre is a sustainable cities initiative by Siemens, a global powerhouse in electronics and electrical engineering. It will explore how sustainable technologies can shape a better future for our cities.

    The £30 million building in London’s Docklands will create up to 50 local jobs and contain a free public exhibition, conference facilities, research space and as well as a restaurant, café and shop. As a flagship global hub for excellence and learning in urban sustainability, it will bring together mayors, city decision-makers, urban planners, architects, engineers, policy makers and sustainability experts from around the world.

    The Crystal takes shape - Siemens launches London’s newest landmark, ‘the Crystal’, as Mayor of London visits site

    Siemens today announced a brand new name for its landmark centre for urban sustainability at a high level ‘topping out’ ceremony in East London.

    The £30 million visitor attraction and global knowledge hub – the Crystal – will open to the public next summer and show how the latest infrastructure technology can make the world’s cities better places to live and work.

    Designed and under construction in two dramatic, crystal-shaped sections, the Crystal will be an eye-catching new landmark for London’s Royal Victoria Docks, at the epicentre of the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson's regeneration plans for the east of the capital. Sited in London's only Enterprise Zone in Newham which offers inward investment incentives to this area, the Crystal is also part of the Mayor's Green Enterprise District.

    Iconic Building Infographic

    The Crystal has been designed to be one of the most sustainable buildings in the world. It is aiming for top scores of the most stringent environmental international standards for sustainable design and construction LEED and BREEAM.

    Designed as an ‘all electric’ building, it demonstrates innovative technologies using solar power and ground source heat pumps to generate its own energy – which means that no fossil fuels are burnt in the building. It also stores electrical energy in a battery. The Crystal showcases existing technologies that support sustainable urban living and profiles Siemens’ Environmental Portfolio – the largest and most comprehensive in the world.
